Decatur, Stephen
(5 ene. 1779, Sinepuxent, Md., EE.UU.–22 mar. 1820, Bladensburg, Md.).

Oficial naval estadounidense. Entró a la marina en 1798. Durante la guerra de Tripolitania, dirigió una osada expedición al interior del puerto de Trípoli destinada a prender fuego a un buque estadounidense que había sido capturado. En la guerra anglo-estadounidense estuvo al mando del USS United States y se apoderó del buque inglés Macedonian. En 1815 fue comandante de un escuadrón en el Mediterráneo que obligó a los estados bereberes a firmar la paz según las condiciones estadounidenses. A su regreso, en un banquete, hizo un brindis a "Nuestra patria, con razón o sin ella. El mismo año ascendió a comisionado naval, cargo que desempeñó hasta que murió en un duelo.
